Evanston Fire & Life-Safety Services maintains a full-time professional staff of 112 members. The staff includes 109 sworn members and three civilian support personnel. 2008 was the busiest year in the Department’s history. In 2008, we responded to 9,134 calls, which resulted in 20,655 fire department vehicle responses for that year. Since 1981, the request for Fire Department services have almost doubled.
Our goal is to prevent fires and life-loss through the finest in fire protection, rescue, emergency medical services, and fire prevention services. We have five fire stations located throughout the City. The fire stations are staffed 24 hours a day/365 days a year. These stations house five fire engines, two ladder trucks, two ambulances, and a Command Vehicle. We have two reserve fire engines, one reserve ladder truck, and a reserve ambulance. The majority of our members are certified paramedics in addition to being firefighters.
Besides staffing two Advanced Life-Support Ambulances, every suppression company is equipped with Advanced Life-Support equipment. This means as soon as the fire engine arrives, it can begin life-saving treatment even before the ambulance arrives.
We are often asked why we also send a fire engine on every ambulance call. There are several reasons. The fire engines usually arrive at the scene prior to the ambulance and can begin treatment which could include intravenous lines, heart monitoring, medications and airway support. When someone is having chest pain or an asthma attack, every second counts. Secondly, if only the ambulance responded, it would be difficult for a crew of two to carry all the necessary equipment in and out of the building while trying to maintain patient care and perform the various procedures that need to be done. Lastly, we are usually called for a sudden onset of a medical condition or injury and the patient is not able to move themselves. Many times they are on upper floors or in areas that are not very accessible requiring several firefighter/paramedics to assist with patient movement and transport.
On January 12, 2009 at 1:30 PM, Fire Station #5 located at 2830 Central Street was
re-opened after being closed for a year due construction of a new facility replacing the former station that was built in 1954. This is the City’s first LEEDS (Green) Building.
Through the overall efforts of the City to support Fire and Emergency Services, property owners enjoy insurance premium benefits of an Insurance Services Office (ISO) fire protection "Class 3" rating.
