City to Rename Civic Center after Lorraine H. Morton
The City of Evanston will rename the Civic Center as the Lorraine H. Morton Civic Center this coming Monday, November 9, 2009. The rededication will take place at 8:10 p.m. on the east side of the building (2100 Ridge Ave., Evanston.
Residents are encouraged to join Evanston’s elected officials, staff members, and guests for the ceremony.
Lorraine H. Morton served as Mayor of Evanston from 1993 to 2009. Earlier, Morton worked for nine years as Alderman of Evanston’s Fifth Ward. Prior to her term as Alderman, Morton was Principal of Haven Middle School for 12 years and taught at Foster Elementary School, Chute Middle School, and Nichols Middle School. Morton was the first Democrat and first African-American mayor in Evanston’s history.
