Art Under Glass

Art Under Glass promotes local artists and enhances the aesthetics of our community by placing the work of Evanston artists in vacant storefront windows.

Art Under Glass is a collaborative project between the Arts & Business Committee of the Evanston Arts Council and local commerce. This program is open to artists who live and/or work in Evanston.

Art Under Glass showcases the work of Evanston artists in open storefront windows throughout Evanston. The goal is to bring visual energy to unoccupied retail spaces and to expose artistic works to the Evanston community. Professional and emerging artists will be reviewed by an independent jury for exhibition opportunities based on artistic quality. The final selection process will match artists’ works with suitability of available spaces.

APRIL 6, 2011
The next round (Phase Five) of the Art Under Glass Program will expand beyond the confines of downtown Evanston!

The Arts & Business Committee of the Evanston Arts Council is seeking large-scale work to display at Evanston Plaza in the West Village neighborhood. The work will be displayed in a highly visible location, a free-standing building that was formerly a China Buffet restaurant site near the intersection of Dempster St. and Dodge Ave. The application deadline is Monday, April 25. We anticipate hanging the work in late May.

This is an excellent opportunity for artists to participate in helping to beautify and energize Evanston’s new West Village community. Submissions will be reviewed by an independent jury and final selections will be made based on the suitability of the work for the available window spaces. Again, we are particularly looking for large art to pique the interest of drivers passing by.

History

Created by the Arts & Business Committee of the Evanston Arts Council, Art Under Glass brings life and energy to Evanston streets, showcasing the work of local artists in unoccupied retail spaces. The first three cycles were a joint project between the Arts & Business Committee, Downtown Evanston, and Farnsworth-Hill, Inc., which manages the buildings featuring the art. A fourth cycle of artwork included the participation of YEA artists and was introduced in October 2010.

Project coordinators are Jill Brazel, chair of the Evanston Arts Council, and Penny Rotheiser, co-chair of the Arts & Business Committee.
