Twitter and Facebook

Posted by Wally Bobkiewicz on Sep 1, 2009 at 7:36 AM in General Announcements

The City will start "twittering" in the next several days.  I will let everyone know when we start doing this.  We will also start a Facebook page this month too.  What else should we be doing on the Internet to communicate with folks?

How about having a LinkedIn City of Evanston group?

Someone has already made a Fan page for Evanston, but a City of Evanston Facebook is a great idea, with daily posts to remember this and that and then something really good or important will make the rounds of forwards. I've found Facebook to be very functional that way.

I like the idea that the city will start to "communicate" with its citizens. But that implies that you'll push information toward us. The real issue, as anyone who's lived here a few weeks already knows, is getting the city to accept information from us. Your staff is run like a collection of independent fiefdoms who believe they can do whatever they want and whenever they want -- and rather than respect the input of residents, they treat us like we're annoyances who should be ignored. So, communicate away, new boy. But until you can demonstrate your ability to transform an arrogant crew of autocrats into a competent band of responsive public servants, excuse our skepticism.

Wally
I think it's great that you're starting this blog. I applaud your communication efforts. Unfortunately, this gives people an opportunity to slander whole groups of people without getting specific.

What I feared would happen eventually happened the first week. Ed started the vague griping. Which department/departments caused him to turn off to an entire collection of people? What happened? Maybe if Ed had complained at the time he felt he received poor service, he could have gotten results.

I know that employees in my dept. work hard, really care about the residents and want to do a great job, day in and day out. I am happy to be called a servant, but I'm not an autocrat. I'm a taxpayer, too, so I don't mind when someone tells me that they pay my salary. They do. However, I certainly am never arrogant when interacting with a resident or visitor to the City. I love Evanston. It's not perfect, but every day my co-workers and I come in to do the best job we can do with the resources we are given.

I hope Ed's next encounter is with one of the many many other city employees who have the same attitude I have, and not with one of the few who have a "fiefdom" mentality.

I could care less about Twittering or Facebook. I use Facebook to keep up with my friends and family, and refuse to be a "Twit". I've signed up for direct email for other city notices, and that is my preference.

How Can I add my twitter posts on the sidebar?

Are city employees on facebook & twitter on city time? I believe this is against COE acceptable computer usage! Perhaps less Twitting or facebooking and more ACTUAL work would be more appropriate!

I have been following the City of Evanston on Facebook and Twitter and it has been used quite efficiently.
