Newsy Items on the 11/23/09 City Council Agenda

Posted by Wally Bobkiewicz on Nov 21, 2009 at 10:32 AM

1.  Discussion about City Council's goal regarding Northwestern University.

2.  Consideration of raising registration fees on vacant buildings from $200 to $400 a year.  (See staff report PDF).

3.  Meatiest item of the night is on the Administration and Public Works Committee agenda to consider changes to City's refuse, recycling and green waste program.  Staff is proposing the City contract out waste hauling, perform recycling services with City staff and make changes to the sanitation service rate structure beginning March 1.  The change of how the City performs these services can save over $500,000 a year.  Adjustments to the sanitation service fees could bring in an additional $1.5 million to reduce the overall general tax subsidy of our refuse services from nearly $3.4 million to $1.4 million.  This $2 million savings would then be applied toward reducing the City's current $8 million budget deficit.  More information with the agenda staff report here (PDF).
