Snow Emergency Declared

Posted by CoE Admin on Jan 8, 2010 at 6:57 AM in Snow Alert, Streets & Sanitation

The City of Evanston has declared a snow emergency this morning.  This impacts streets with parking on both sides which are NOT posted as snow routes.

So there is no parking between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on the even numbered side of the street on even days (today is even, Friday January 8, 2010).

No parking between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on the odd numbered side of the street on odd days (tomorrow is odd, Saturday January 9, 2010).

For more information, please consult the City's Snow Parking Regulations website.

And yes, there are sirens for this emergency too: at 7:15 AM and 12:15 PM.

The siren is a bad idea from many respects and needs to be reconsidered urgently. First, when there is a real emergency during the winter, the siren will not have its desired effect because the public - especially new residents such as students - will not be sure whether it means they should be concerned or if they can park on the other side of the street today.

Second, the siren is a public nuisance like the neighbor's hen of olden days. It wakes the public up prematurely and disturbs their right to a peaceful enjoyment of their property. It, therefore, potentially diminishes the property values of the surrounding areas to the police station. As a new resident I have been awaken every morning with alarm, wondering what could be causing the sound only to learn today that my fears can be allayed: now I know which side of the street to park my car.

Installing small signs on the streets of Evanston is much more reasonable solution that does not pose this nuisance.
