Mayor Tisdahl led a group from Evanston to Springfield last week for “Evanston Day in Springfield.”

Anna Kelly, an NU student intern this quarter in the City Manager’s Office, went down to Springfield with the group and shares her thoughts for the blog:

“The City of Evanston Community Lobby Day in Springfield took place Thursday, April 29th, and it was a huge success! A group of 70 Evanston community members and community leaders traveled to the state capital in Springfield, Illinois to meet with legislative leaders, lobby legislators, observe the Senate gallery, and attend a reception at the Sangamo Club hosted by NU President Morton Schapiro. Evanston residents were welcomed to Springfield with a lunch at the Governor’s Mansion and a speech by Jerry Stermer, Chief of Staff for Governor Pat Quinn.

Evanston residents had the opportunity to talk to legislative leaders including Senate President Cullerton and Senate Minority Leader Christine Rodogno. They also met with Evanston Senator Jeff Schoenberg and Representative Robyn Gable, as well as Evanston residents Michelle Sadler and Julie Hamos. Representative David Miller met with the group, as well as Transportation Secretary Hannig and Jeff Stauter, the Director of Policy for the Department of Economics and Commerce. Hot topics included the state budget, funding for education, and a push for a new health center in Evanston.

Northwestern President Morton Schapiro hosted a reception at the Springfield Sangamo Club for all attendees as well as several Northwestern alumni, and Senator Collins, Senator Cronin, Senator Rodogno, and Senator Schoenberg were in attendance as well as Representative Gabel and Representative Lang. Music was provided by students at Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music. This reception gave Evanston residents the opportunity to socialize with each other as well as network with legislators and Northwestern employees. It was a great day!”
