Lehman Walker

The City received unexpected news this week with the announcement that Community and Economic Development Director Lehman Walker would be returning to University Center, Missouri where he had served many years as the Community Development Director to become its City Manager.

Lehman has been such a great addition to the City's team since joining us late last year.  I remember greeting him on his first day saying to take his time to get to know his new department because on his second day I would need to ask him to begin reviewing needed budget reductions in his department.  He took those first few weeks in stride even though I was asking that he make decisions no new department director should be faced with making so early in his tenure.

Lehman and I had an opportunity to take a road trip several weeks ago to East Lansing, Michigan for a meeting of the City Managers of communities with Big Ten Conference universities.  The topic of the meeting was economic development , so Lehman came to share our current work and get ideas from our colleagues.  We had a good drive together.  In addition to a productive time in East Lansing, we also got a chance to have lunch at my favorite Bob's Big Boy along Interstate 94.

Lehman will be an excellent City Manager.  A big loss for us, but the residents of University City are getting back a truly fine man.
