Holiday Sustainability Ideas

The City's new Sustainable Programs Coordinator Catherine Hurley passes along the following post on holiday sustainability ideas:

"As our cold winter weather continues, many people may be looking for creative activities to do inside and around the house. One tradition that many families participate in during the holidays is to donate extra or unneeded items to local charities. This also helps to make room for the gifts that we hope to receive. I saw a great article in the Evanston Patch this morning regarding the ways we can “re-gift” items to other people rather than throwing them away. There are so many different ways we can pass along our stuff that can reduce the amount of garbage we send to the landfill and also provide someone else with items they need.

Keeping Evanston Beautiful has also created a great list of the various organizations and avenues for donating items that can be reused or recycled properly.

As we are in the midst of the gift-giving season, consider making room for your new stuff by giving away some of your older stuff to worthy causes. This in turn will help you to have a greener holiday and bring cheer to someone in need."
