Evanston Vehicle Sticker Update

Posted by Wally Bobkiewicz on Jan 7, 2011 at 12:06 PM in Administrative Services

The deadline to purchase 2011 City of Evanston vehicle permits is Monday January 10, 2011. The City is offering extended hours to purchase the permits tomorrow, Saturday January 8, from 9 AM to 1 PM on the first floor of the Civic Center. The Civic Center will also be open on Monday January 10 until 7:30 PM to purchase permits. A penalty of 50% of the fee will be added to all applications received/postmarked after January 10, 2011.

The process of purchasing and issuing permits each year is complicated because of the need to actually get the physical permit or permits to residents (a regular vehicle sticker and also district residential parking permits). While the City offers multiple ways to do this from November 1 to January 10, the process should be easier.

As of today, some residents have not received their permits purchased by mail or through our website. If a resident has sent their permit form or completed the form on our website more than 14 days ago and has not received the permit, please contact the City at 847-448-8292 or by email at parking@cityofevanston.org for assistance. There is no need to come to the Civic Center. We can handle issue via phone or email. Some residents have also had difficulties that have been caused by inaccurate or out of date vehicle information that we receive electronically from the State of Illinois. The City recognizes the issue and will resolve in time for the 2012 permit process. Finally, there have been issues with residents not having vehicle registration or proof of residency that has been sufficient under our current guidelines to issue permits. I believe that these current guidelines are not appropriate for the needs of the process to issue vehicle permits and will also be revised for the 2012 permit process.

In order to allow these remaining issues for 2011 to be resolved, the Police Department will not be citing expired permits until early February.

I recognize that the vehicle permit process is one of the few annual City processes that most every resident interacts with the City of Evanston. It is our goal to make the process more efficient and user friendly in the future. Please feel free to contact me directly with any comments or additional suggestions at citymanagersoffice@cityofevanston.org

I would have done this all electronically but there is a convenience charge for doing so. It is funny how it is not only convenient for me to do this, but also convenient for city that has had to lay off employees in these hard times. This is a ridiculous charge, that is cramping up the whole system. I believe if you removed this charge, your jobs will be much easier and I will have my permits in less than two and a half months and in time for the imposed deadline that your services can't even meet. Two and half months to process two permits and checks is ludacris.... wait they still have not been processed so who knows how long it will take.
