City Council Meeting Format to be Discussed by Rules Committee

Posted by Wally Bobkiewicz on Apr 10, 2011 at 10:14 AM in General Announcements

The City Council's schedule is a little different this week because of the annual meeting of Evanston Township jointly held with the City Council on Tuesday night.  So the Council decided last month to move the monthly Rules Committee meeting in April to the second Monday.  Many members were out of town last week for Spring Vacation, so all works out.

The main item on Monday night's Rules Committee agenda is to review some research Executive Assistant to the City Manager Kate Todd and our NU Civic Engagement Intern Bailey Sill have done on Council meeting format in ten other communities.  It is interesting information.

Unfortunately, no absolute trends that we can embrace easily.  The Evanston City Council use of committees is different than the other communities surveyed and am not sure how changes will be welcomed.  Evanston's use of a Consent Calendar is also different than other communities.  Finally, the Evanston Council will have to grapple with presentations (both staff and community) at meetings.  We are much more generous with time for presentations than other cities.  Should be an interesting discussion Monday night.
