Walt Disney and the 4th of July in Evanston

Posted by wbobkiewicz on Jun 21, 2011 at 5:15 PM in Events

Evanston celebrates the 4th of July bigger and better than most communities An independent non-profit, the Evanston 4th of July Association sponsors the event with private funding for the parade and fireworks. The City helps with Police, Fire and Public Works assistance. I heard last year a story about the role that Walt Disney played in the parade.  As I heard the story, Walt Disney was hired to put on a great show at what was then Dyche Stadium on…

On behalf of the City of Evanston, my thanks to everyone in the community for your understanding and cooperation as we have worked to move snow out of your way. It has been a major undertaking.  Staff has been working 24 hours a day since last Tuesday afternoon to clear and remove snow. There are many things we think we did right and many things we want to change not only for the next blizzard, but anytime we declare a…

Day of Caring and Wheel Barrels

Posted by wbobkiewicz on Oct 18, 2010 at 12:39 PM in Events

Saturday was the North Shore United Way's "Day of Caring.". I was assigned to work at the Evanston Infant Welfare Society's Child Care Center. When I arrived I was assigned to help move wood chips from the front of the building to the rear. There was unfortunately no good way to do this, so I volunteered to go to Home Depot to get a wheel barrel. I purchased the wheel barrel and took it to my car. I soon realized…

Evanston Named Best Sports City in USA

Posted by wbobkiewicz on Oct 8, 2010 at 5:54 PM in Events, General Announcements

Last year, I reported on the blog that Evanston was named the 4th best sports city in USA. Of course we were grouped in with another area city .......Chicago. Well, the same Sporting News poll has come out for 2010 and we are now the best sports city in the USA (with Chicago). It was the purple water in Fountain Square that made the difference.  That or the Stanley Cup, but I bet it was the purple fountain.…

Andys Frozen Custard Ribbon Cutting and Giveway

Posted by wbobkiewicz on Jul 16, 2010 at 11:54 AM in Events

First Ward Alderman Judy Fiske presided over the ribbon cutting for the new Andy's Frozen Custard in Downtown Evanston.  Along with the ribbon cutting Andy's is also giving away free sundaes all day today.  The sundaes are not just mini-sized, but full sized sundaes with whatever topping you like.  Very classy for Andy to do this.  There was already a long line at 11 AM this morning. Patrons are being asked to make a donation to the Evanston YWCA for…

Carolyn and I had talked about attending the event over the last few weeks and she shared with me…

Over twenty volunteers gathered today at the Civic Center for the City's first code-a-thon. The volunteers were asked to help migrate information from the City's current website to the platform for the City's new website which is scheduled to go on-line July 1.  Volunteers were asked to choose specific assignments divided into three categories: computer user, designer and programmer.  Each assignment was geared to an individuals strengths and backgrounds. I picked an asssignment in the "computer user" category and spent…
