A fire occurred this evening at the YMCA, 1000 Grove Street. The following details are from talking to EFD and YMCA staff on the scene. They were all busy responding to the emergency, so some times and details may ultimately be corrected: Upon arrival we learned that locations throughout downtown Evanston were experiencing power outages beginning in the late afternoon. Evanston Receives Assistance to Firefighters Grant
U.S. Senator Richard Durbin announced Thursday that the City of Evanston Fire Department had received a grant of $600,000 to replace an aerial ladder truck. This grant will replace 20 year old equipment and will cover about half the cost of the new equipment.…

Fire at 1106 Crain
Here is an update on the fire this morning from Fire Chief Alan Berkowsky: "A fire broke out around 11:15 AM today. A single 911 call reported heavy smoke coming out of the apartment at 1106 Crain. This is a four-story apartment building managed by Nimrod Realty Company. The Evanston Police Department released its 2009 crime stats yesterday. From the Police Department's Press Release: "While other communities throughout the nation may have seen a rise in crime between 2008 and 2009, the City of Evanston has achieved a significant decline as it pertains to major part-one crime categories. Feral Cat Update
The following is a press release from the Evanston Police Department: "Back on 1-24-10 Evanston police responded to a death investigation in the 1900 Blk. of Grant St. Evanston, Illinois. It was determined that the deceased died of natural causes. As an outgrowth of this investigation police discovered that a feral cat colony, estimated at approximately 100 cats, resided on or about the deceased’s property. New Laws Coming Soon
The City Council recently passed an increase in the fine for speeding in a school zone. This new fine will go into effect on February 26. The City will be doing a campaign over the next few weeks to raise awareness of this and overall school traffic safety. The City Council is also set Monday to give final approval to a citywide ban on cell phone use while driving without using a hands-free device. This law would go into effect…
