Newsy Items on Monday and Tuesday City Council Agendas
This week is a strange schedule for the Council. Monday is a special meeting starting at 7:30 PM. Two items on the agenda. First is a discussion of water and sewer issues. Staff will present a Powerpoint presentation to walk through the various issues facing both sewer and water. Both need more money. Sewer because of the substantial debt it has to pay off on capital projects. Water to help fund additional capital projects. We are going to propose a variety of…

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Suzette Robinson as Director of Public Works. Council Actions February 22, 2010
1. The City Council completed its work on the budget tonight. The Council eliminated one unpaid holiday for staff, reducing the total number from five to four unpaid holidays during FY 2010/11. This was the only substantial change from its decisions on Saturday. 2. The City Council also adopted the Capital budget for FY 2010/11 agreeing to $7.8 million of new general obligation debt for capital spending in addition to projects funded from other sources. The Council will hold a special…

Snow Emergency Declared
The City of Evanston has declared a snow emergency this morning. This impacts streets with parking on both sides which are NOT posted as snow routes. So there is no parking between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on the even numbered side of the street on even days (today is even, Friday January 8, 2010). No parking between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on the odd numbered side of the street on odd days (tomorrow is odd, Saturday January 9,…
Snow Watch 2010
The first major snow event of the season appears to be on the way to Evanston. See our website for information on snow emergencies and follow us on this blog, our website, Twitter and Facebook for more information as the storm progresses. Feel free to comment here as well on any issues that may arise during the storm that the City needs to address. Web 2.0 in Action
The New York Times today had an article on a website called SeeClickFix.com. I saw the article on-line and decided to read it later in the day. This is a private website designed to help people submit complaints about their City to their City. The City needs to be watching the site to get the info. By 10 AM I had received a call from an Evanston resident to complain about an alley near her home. She too had read the newspaper article today and…

Snow Plow Painting Contest
OK, maybe its just because I have worked in California the last twenty years, but I think this is really neat: The City is sponsoring a contest to judge the best painted snow plow blades. This is the fourth year of the contest, with this year's theme: "Recycle Smart: Use Your Cart." The blades are painted by children at area schools and are currently on display out front of the Civic Center. You can read more about the contest and…
Recycling Bins
The City has been working on replacing the small orange recycle bins we have been using for curbside recycling with larger roller blue bins. As this change is happening, the City is collecting the orange bins left at the curb once the blue bins have been delivered. If a resident would like to keep their orange bin for in-home recycling once the blue bin is delivered, then they should no longer use them at the curb. Some residents who have…
Recycling No. 6 Plastic Containers
A first question from a resident: "I am trying to learn why plastic containers marked no. 6 (most common form is Styrofoam, which is made from oil and is not biodegradable) are not recycled?" Suzanne Eggleston, the City's Interim Director of Public Works replies: "Plastic containers marked number six are not recycled because there is currently no after market demand for them by the recycling processor we send our recycling to. If they are placed in the recycling bin they…
