Who We Are |
A New District
Historically, the western edge of Evanston has been known for its industrial origin. Once home to a steel mill, brick yards, and major railroad infrastructure, it has been evolving since the middle of the 20th century. Gone are heavy industrial uses, replaced by small to mid-size commercial enterprises. And, in between, modern manufacturing and technology uses continue Evanston’s industrial legacy.
Investing in the Future

In early 2010, local businesses began working with city staff to identify collaborative strategies to strengthen the business environment in west Evanston. These efforts continue and include regular meetings which serve as forums to discuss specific concerns and issues of local businesses. Through these discussions, the district has identified three current goals:
- Define an improved and more reflective image for the district
- Develop a marketing strategy to create visibility and assist with business retention/attraction
- Position and prepare the district for economic turnaround by evaluating its needs and capitalizing on its assets
To learn more about the district’s goals and plans for the coming year, view its 2010-11 Strategic Plan.
