Evanston Fire Department personnel evacuated several homes around Ridge Avenue and Lake Street Tuesday after a contractor working in the area struck a two-inch gas main.
Division Chief Thomas Janetske said the incident occurred about 9:40 a.m., as contractors were working on Ridge, which is in the second phase of a total reconstruction.
Janetske said no injuries were reported. He said the homes were evacuated for precautionary purposes.
Firefighter crews secured the area until the gas company, Nicor, could arrive to fix the leak, he said. He said crews also were using an air monitor at the scene to make sure any emissions fall within safe limits.
Nicor secured the leak and emergency crews departed the scene at 12:56 p.m.
