BONFIRE PERMITS

Open burning is not permitted in Evanston for any reason unless the Evanston Fire Prevention Bureau gives approval. A special permit will be issued for any open burning activity in Evanston.

Permits will be issued for the locations given below. To obtain a permit, click on the location you would like, read the instructions and regulations pertaining to that location, then fill out the application on-line.

The Cement Ring

The Cement Fire Ring is located at the Lakefront area next to the Evanston Art Center. In order to request a permit for the use of the bonfire ring, you must first telephone the Ecology Center at 847.448.8256 to schedule an available date for the use of the ring. Only one fire permit is issued for each date.


There is a $30 fee for residents or a $60 fee for non-residents. Proof of residency must be provided to receive the resident rate. The fee must be paid at the time the permit date is confirmed.
After the date is scheduled, you may fill out the form on-line and send it, via the submit button on the form, to Evanston Fire and Life Safety Services Headquarters. The approved permit will be returned to you via email. Permits may only be issued to the person requesting the permit. You must acknowledge that you have read and understand the rules and regulations. The application must include some form of identification, either Driver's License or Social Security Number. Please allow 7-10 working days to receive your permit after you have submitted the form.

Northwestern University

This bonfire ring is for the use of the Northwestern University students and faculty only. Students wishing to use the bonfire area at Northwestern must first schedule the date and time of the bonfire with their Office of Special Events, located at the Norris University Center.


After the date and time are approved by the Office of Special Events, the student will receive a two-page e-mail form with an approval code number. The student will then forward the two page e-mail form to jedwards@cityofevanston.org at the Evanston Fire Department Headquarters for a bonfire permit.


Fill out the permit application online. The approved permit will be returned to you via email. You must acknowledge that you have read and understand the rules and regulations. The application must include some form of identification, either Driver's License or Social Security Number. It is requested that you fill out the permit application at least five working days before the date of the bonfire.
