MOLD
Molds are simple, microscopic organisms, found virtually everywhere, indoors and outdoors. Mold can be found on plants, foods, dry leaves, and other organic material. Mold spores are tiny and lightweight, so they travel through the air. Mold growths can often be seen in the form of discoloration. When they are present in large numbers, they may cause allergic reactions or skin irritations.
Most building surfaces can provide adequate nutrients to support the growth of mold. When mold spores land on material that is damp - for example, walls, floors, appliances (such as humidifiers or air conditioners), carpet or furniture - they can begin to multiply. Any sources of moisture must be eliminated to remove the mold.
Residents have called requesting inspections with regards to mold. The Evanston Health and Human Services Department is unable to provide inspections for mold. There are no federal, state, or local laws that address the number of acceptable or unacceptable spores in a home.
If mold has caused or is the result of significant structural damage and you are a tenant, please call Property Standards (847-866-2927) and the Human Relations Commission (847) 866-2920.
