Human Relations
It is the desire of the Human Relations Commission to ensure that all citizens and those desiring to live or work in our community regardless of race, color, creed, national origin, sexual orientation and economic and educational levels are afforded an opportunity to grow and participate in our economic, educational, political, social and judicial systems. To this end, we administer and enforce the Residential Landlord and Tenant Ordinance, Fair Employment Practices Ordinance as well as the Fair Housing Ordinances and other programs that strive to achieve our goals.
Additionally,
- We provide (at no cost) training to Realtors, property owners / managers, tenants, and individuals who are interested in purchasing or renting property in Evanston.
- We respond to inquiries and concerns relative to the purchase or rental of property.
- We process charges of discrimination and conduct investigations to aid us in the investigatory process. We possess subpoena powers.
- We provide mediation services through our Alternative Dispute Resolution Program. Trained mediators mediate a variety of disputes to include but not limited to neighbor / neighbor, consumer / merchant, landlord / tenant.
- We facilitate and participate in a variety of activities to include community wide dialogues on race relations, civility, violence prevention, crime, accessibility, etc.
- We address / investigate activities such as hate crimes.
- We administer a Summer Youth Employment Program
