ALTERNATIVE DISPUTE RESOLUTION

The Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Program is mediation. Mediation is a process where parties are encouraged through a mediator to arrive at solutions that address their specific issues(s)/problem(s). Staff are trained mediators who mediate a variety of conflicts to include but not limited to neighbor/neighbor, consumer/merchant, and landlord/tenant. The mediator is a neutral third person whose objective is to help the disputing parties reach a mutually acceptable agreement on all or any part of the issues in dispute. This is accomplished by assisting the parties in the identification of issues, encouraging joint problem-solving and exploring settlement alternatives. The mediator is not a trier of fact and does not impose resolutions or sanctions.

Problems/issues/instances that are ideal for mediation are situations were there is no clear violation of the law; Family feuds/disputes, situations where the police have been called several times and there has been no resolution, nuisances, e.g., noise, barking dogs, harassment, etc., property matters, e.g., trees, fences, signs, parking, etc. Cases are also referred via the judicial system.
