FAIR HOUSING

People choose to live in our community because of its diversity. To this end the Human Relations Commission promotes, protects and enforces the City of Evanston's fair housing laws. Our Fair Housing laws provide an opportunity to secure to all persons living and/or working, or desiring to live and/or work in the City of Evanston an equal opportunity to view, purchase, lease, rent, or occupy real estate without discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, age, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, familial status, or national origin of any individual.

We provide and/or coordinate no cost training to Realtors, property owners/managers, tenants and individuals who are interested in purchasing or renting property in Evanston. We address inquiries and concerns relative to the purchase or rental of property. All fair housing complaints are investigated promptly and brought to resolution as quickly as possible. If necessary, legal action is initiated, and fines are sought against offending parties when warranted. If fair housing discrimination were determined, staff would work with the individual(s) or business(es) to educate him/her/them about fair housing laws and the fair housing ordinance.
