Youth Application
To compete for a summer job, teens must meet all eligibility requirements and they must attend and participate in the Mayor’s Summer Youth Employment Program Job Fair.
Here is an opportunity for teens to plan their summer employment experiences and meet and interview with employers who have jobs available for them. Teens should come to the Job Fair appropriately dressed for success.
Teens will also complete applications; review and select jobs that they are interested in pursuing; and participate in a session designed to help begin the development of or to improve interview skills.
Last year, teens performed a variety of jobs including office assistants, camp counselors, field assistants, custodians, health aides, production assistants, inclusion aides and program assistants.
In addition, teens are assigned to the community service team where they perform tasks that include green collar jobs, the cleaning of parkways, alleys, traffic calming circles and some parks. There is also a paint crew that has taken on such projects as painting traffic signals and boxes.
The Mayor’s Summer Youth Employment Program was created in 1992 to provide summer employment opportunities for Evanston youth. Since that time, over 2,000 Evanston youth between the ages of 14 through 18 have been placed in seasonal employment by the City of Evanston and local businesses.

City’s 50/50 Program
Calling all Evanston businesses and organizations! Here is an opportunity for you to increase your summer workforce and hire some teens. Contact the Human Relations Commision to find out more about this exciting program.
In an effort to expand the employment opportunities and realizing that some businesses may not have the resources to participate, the City will provide businesses with 50% of the salary (not to exceed half the minimum wage per hour for a maximum of nine weeks). Businesses will be reimbursed at the conclusion of the program or when the participant’s employment terminates.
Businesses interested in participating in the Job Fair and Summer Youth Employment Program should complete the following Employer Application Form and return it to the Human Relations Commission.

Forms are also available by calling the Human Relations Commission, (847) 866-2920. We will assist teens in acquiring work permits and will provide technical assistance to employers.
The Commission will assist businesses that cannot attend the Job Fair by identifying volunteers to attend in their places. Evanston employers may be eligible for the City’s 50/50 Program, in which the City pays half of a teen’s salary.
To be eligible, an employer must be Evanston-based with an equal employment philosophy and written statement. Employers must agree to abide by the Child Labor Law. Non-for-profit agencies and faith-based organizations are welcomed employers. Participating employers will be reimbursed at the conclusion of the program.
