3/25/07 - Pat Keegan, Mike Madden, Richard Mertz and Bruce Slown from the Business Process & Technology group recently received an award for their strategic plan as part of the 2006 Richard Goodman Strategic Planning Award program. The “honorable recognition” award, given out by the Association for Strategic Planning at its annual conference held two weeks ago, recognizes distinction in the practice of strategy and honors organizations at the leading edge of strategic planning.

The Business Process & Technology group is a new cross-functional organizational unit consisting of representatives from the Information Systems, the Geographic Information Systems, and Project Management divisions in the Management, Business & Information Systems Department. The mission of the group is to support the City’s overall strategic plan by providing high quality, responsive, cost-effective and secure technology-based services in partnership with the its customers. The Business Process & Technology group’s strategic plan folds eight goals, thirty-one objectives and eighty projects under vision, mission and values statements that all come together to make up their roadmap for success.  The plan represents over a year's worth of effort and solicited the input of all City Departments and employees.

Founded in 1999, the Association for Strategic Planning is the only not-for-profit professional association dedicated to advancing thought and practice in strategy development and deployment. The fact that the award was given to the group by the Association for Strategic Planning is an indication of the high caliber of work produced by City staff. The award is not given out every year—only those plans that meet the Association’s criteria are even considered.  The most recent award was an “Honorable Recognition” given to the California Space Authority in 2006. No award was given out in 2005.

The group thanks all City staff that participated in this strategic planning process. The plan is indeed a plan for their customers and would not exist without the support and feedback provided by employees from every department.
