Evanston Police Department Upcoming Events
2009 Northwestern Football Games
The Evanston Police Department will utilize the mobile Command Post during the 2009 Northwestern University Football Season. The Traffic Commander will be monitoring all calls for service in the neighborhoods around Ryan Field. The following steps are being provided to address neighborhood disorder.
General Guidelines for reporting an incident/crime:
In-progress events should always be reported to 911 in order to be given first priority.
Police related calls that do not require a priority response may be directed to the non-emergency numbers:
Evanston Police 847.866.5000. Northwestern University Police 847.491.3254.
If you report an incident and ask to be seen by police, please wait at the location you provided during the 911 call; unless circumstances require you to seek safety or medical attention. When police arrive at the scene allow them to make an initial assessment of the incident.
Remember that dispatchers give officers specific details of the incident over the radio using the information you provided. Police are taught to approach all situations in an alert state to reduce danger. When police arrive, the witness/caller should allow the responding officer a chance to be certain the scene is safe before approaching them with information.
Once the officer feels secure, he will provide directions to anyone present and begin to collect additional details. Alert officers if someone requires medical attention or if a weapon is involved in the incident.
In most cases, if you are a victim you have a right to file criminal charges against an offender. If you do not desire to file a complaint, you should request that the matter be documented by a report, especially if you believe you may need a record of the incident at a later date. Some incidents do not require a written report and one may not be completed unless you request that the officer document the incident.
If you believe you are being treated unjustly by police or you are not satisfied with the information you are being provided, you always have the right to speak to a patrol supervisor regarding the situation. You may request that a supervisor respond to the scene; call the Patrol Sergeant’s office directly at 847.866.5062 or visit the station at a later time and seek the advice of a supervisor in-person.
