SENIOR SERVICES
The Department's Community Strategies Bureau offers the following programs and services to Evanston residents 60 or better and those who care for them. These services are provided by a Senior Crime Prevention Specialist, who is certified by the State of Illinois as a civilian Elderly Service Officer.

Educational talks on crime prevention are available, including frauds and confidence crimes, elder abuse, identity theft, home and street safety and many related topics to senior groups, community organizations, clubs, residential and long term care facilities, neighborhood groups, etc.
In-Service Training for Law Enforcement
Social service and municipal agencies: Education on Elder Abuse prevention and reporting, including the Elder Abuse & Neglect Act, spotting and preventing financial exploitation and identity theft, recognizing seniors in need of additional intervention, how to initiate and maintain effective interactions between agencies and a primer on local services for seniors. The Senior Crime Specialist is also an instructor at the Evanston Citizen Police Academy and at City of Evanston Taxi Driver Training.
Security Surveys
Free single and multi-family building surveys to evaluate crime prevention and security. An excellent tool for seniors who have lived in their homes for many years and need practical, low cost ways to upgrade the safety of their homes.

- Seniors On Safety Crime Prevention Manual-- a 65-page book written for Evanston seniors and those who care for them. Detailed sections on house, street and nursing home safety, strategies to protect Alzheimer's patients, securing your home while on vacation, driving tips, Elder Abuse, identity theft, funeral and cemetery fraud, avoiding telemarketing and junk mail problems, internet safety and emergency planning. Includes a color map of police beats and a resource guide.
- Get Off The Lists Kit--information on the National Do Not Call Registry and ready-to-use form letters to get your name removed from telemarketing and junk mail lists. The Kit is also found in the back of the SOS Manual.
- File of Life Medical Emergency Card-This large-print, easy to use medical information card comes with a magnetized pocket to place on your refrigerator. These very visible cards provide police, firefighters and paramedics with information that can be used to save time and lives and contact family members in a medical emergency. An excellent tool for those living alone or for shared households such as older persons caring for adult disabled children or adult children living with parents suffering from dementia or other health problems. Can be easily updated if information changes.

Information & Referrals
Evanston and the surrounding communities have an extensive network of services and programs for seniors and the disabled but they may be unknown to you. The Department's Senior Specialist welcomes requests for additional assistance and information regarding police service or other community resources. Assistance for senior victims of suspected Elder Abuse, identity theft, ruse entry and other non-violent crimes.
Tours
Limited tours of the police department available to small groups of seniors, adult day service clients, adult disabled students and other interested groups. Call for a further description or to schedule a tour.
Communitv Outreach
The Senior Specialist participates in many events during the year including the Evanston Farmers' Market, Custer Street Fair, Evanston CommUNITY Picnic, National Night Out, 4th of July Celebration, block parties, community meetings, Health and Wellness Fairs.
