50/50 SIDEWALK PROGRAM
Get your sidewalks improved! Under the 50/50 plan, the City pays half the cost of replacing the sidewalk and/or curb, with the property owner paying the other 50 percent.
The program covers all public walks in the city, including those in front of private homes, businesses, churches and schools. The owner is only charged for the walk or curbing adjacent to his property.
All work in the program is done by contract. The City chooses the lowest qualified bidder early in the year, and that contractor works for the City to replace any sidewalk or curb requested by owners during that year. The work is usually done in the summer months.
To sign up for the program, persons should call the City Engineer’s Office at (847) 866-2924.
After being placed on the Engineering Department’s list, the owner should mark with paint the section(s) in need of replacement. The City will measure the requested replacement portion of the sidewalk or curb, and advise the owner of the results.
Once the measurement is completed, the City Engineer will send the owner an invoice for one-half the cost of replacement. Since bids are taken by the City, this is usually the best price available, and is a firm quotation to the homeowner. The owner should send in a check for his share of the cost immediately, as payment must be received before work can begin.
City engineers will inspect and approve all replacement work after it is completed, before paying the contractor for the job.
