The Evanston Sewer system consists of a conveyance system only, conveying sanitary and storm sewage to the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) of Greater Chicago for treatment. As of 1999 the system consists of approximately 142 miles of combined sewer main and 26 miles of relief sewers. Evanston is currently in the middle of a Long Range Sewer Improvement Program to mitigate the long standing problems of basement sewage backups and street flooding during periods of heavy rain. Improvements began in 1990 with completion anticipated in approximately 2008. See the Long Range Sewer Improvement Program for additional information regarding this project.
Evanston Sewer Division personnel perform operations and maintenance to the Evanston sewer conveyance system. Division personnel maintain 4,734 manholes and 7,931 catch basins and inlets. In addition, Sewer Division also maintains 750,304 ft. of combined sewer system and 137,365 ft. of relief sewer system. The routine work includes sewer pipe line inspection and cleaning, drainage structure inspection and cleaning, rainstorm related inspection as well as drainage structure and sewer pipe line repair.
