“How We Read: Close, Hyper, Machine”

Reading and “the human” are entwined in multiple complex ways, from the effects of reading on neural functioning to the use of reading as a purveyor of cultural values. This talk will argue for the centrality of two other reading modes, hyper reading and machine reading, and will explore the changing constructions of meaning that result when these other reading modalities are taken into account.

Death in a Lawless Land: the Massacre of Immigrants in Mexico

In September 2010, 72 Central and South American immigrants were murdered by an organized crime group just 100 miles south of the Texas border. This incident, and a rising number of similar attacks are becoming a part of everyday life in Mexico. John Sevigny, a photographer and long-time immigration advocate who has photographed Central Americans headed to the United States, talks about the growing violence against migrants in Mexico. Sevigny's photographs will be on display at the Evanston Public Library through November.
The Verve Pipe: Kids Show!

With sales of three million albums worldwide and a reputation for spectacular live performances, the genesis of The Verve Pipe can be traced back to the early 90s. In 2009, the band was approached to submit a new song for a compilation album of children’s songs. That session inspired A Family Album, an original collection of songs intended for the entire family,with fun and inventive lyrics set to the memorable melodies the band is known for.

Arnold Steinhardt occupies a place of honor in the classical music hall of fame as the first violinist of the legendary Guarneri String Quartet, one of the most celebrated ensembles of the last 40 years. This intimate evening will feature video projections of the score, Steinhardt’s insightful commentary, and his performance of the Chaconne, followed by a lively question-and-answer session. Sam Winch "The Lullabadeer"

Sam Winch’s debut disc, The Lullabadeer, is a concept album about his fictional alter ego, who was born in a bowling alley and eventually wound up running away to the circus, after which a complicated story emerges involving clowns and ukuleles. The Lullabadeer is that tricky combination of rollicking and sad.
An Architectural Walking Tour of Daniel Burnham’s Evanston Neighborhood

The first tour will be a Burnham Neighborhood walking tour. This docent-led tour of Daniel Burnham’s neighborhood takes about an hour and a half and leaves from the History Center. Reservations are recommended. The tour will be canceled only if it is raining at 1:30pm on the tour date.

Filmmaker and intellectual Jean-Pierre Gorin's filmmaking has been sparse, but his “Southern California Trilogy” documentaries have been recognized as classics in the genre. The first of those films, the remarkable Poto and Cabengo, interweaves the lives of two six year-old identical twin girls who seem to have developed their own private language, and Gorin’s own personal reflections on his adopted country.

This classic tale, steeped in longing, is given another look in a new version adapted by Sarah Ruhl, one of America’s most acclaimed young playwrights, and author of In the Next Room (or the Vibrator Play).
