93XRT welcomes Dar Williams
at S.P.A.C.E., 1245 Chicago Ave.
Tuesday, Oct 26 at 8:00 PM
On one level, the sizable body of work accumulated by celebrated writer/artist Dar Williams is a continuing narrative of her life — what she’s experienced and what she’s observed during her years of intensive touring. On another, it forms a detailed look at the course of modern-day existence in the decade and a half between 1993, when Williams released her debut album, The Honesty Room, and 2008, when her longtime label Razor & Tie released her seventh and most recent studio album, Promised Land. Throughout her career, Williams has employed a reporter’s keen eye and a fiction writer’s feel for nuance in the act of confronting what she’s described as “the big picture of how people approach life,” doing by examining and illuminating the minute details.

Louis Sullivan: The Struggle for American Architecture
at Mary & Leigh Block Museum of Art, 40 Arts Circle Drive
Thuirsday, Oct 28 at 7:00 PM
(Mark Richard Smith, 2010 US, video, 97 min.)
Though a pioneering genius whose work bridged the 19th and 20th centuries both technologically and aesthetically, architect Louis Sullivan (often lauded as the creator of the skyscraper) has never been explored in depth on film. Director Smith rectifies this glaring omission with grand, sweeping shots of Sullivan’s surviving buildings, which showcase the master’s bold exteriors and colorful, intricate interiors in exquisite detail. Sullivan’s unique, iconoclastic style would influence an entire generation of architects, including his former chief draftsman, Frank Lloyd Wright. In person: Mark Richard Smith.
