Celebration for Speedskater Shani Davis Set for March 31

A community celebration honoring Olympic medalist Shani Davis will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, March 31, at the Robert Crown Community Center & Ice Complex. Hosted by the City of Evanston Parks/Forestry and Recreation Department, the celebration will include a brief program on the Center's main ice rink where Davis has skated for many years as a member of the Evanston Speedskating Club. Light refreshments will be served at an informal reception following the program. Both the program and reception are free and open to all.

As a member of the U.S. Speedskating Team competing at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games, Davis won the 1,000-meter race, becoming the first African American to win an Olympic Gold Medal in an individual event in the Winter Olympics. Two days later, he won the Silver Medal in the 1,500-meter race.

The Robert Crown Center is located at 1701 Main Street, Evanston. For more information, call 847-328-9400.
