40th Earth Day Anniversary
The first Earth Day was held in 1970 as a local grassroots community awareness event which is now observed globally. Every year citizens from around the world work together to make positive changes for the environment. Activities range from picking up litter long the roadways to making environmental awareness posters to planting trees in neighborhoods.
Each and every one of us is an important part of these activities. There is so much that can be accomplished. As Margaret Mead said, "A small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has."
Earth Day, celebrated on April 22nd, is a New Year's Day for the environment. People gather around causes to improve both nature and society. These activities are celebrated throughout April, also called Earth Month.
The City of Evanston will mark Earth Day 2010 with the kick off of its CFL Proch Light Campaign. The campaign encourages residents to “light the way” by changing their porch light from a regular incandescent light to an energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL), demonstrating simple actions can make a difference, one porch at a time.
