Area Man Arrested for Auto Burglary
On 7-11-10, at approximately 4:16 a.m. , Evanston patrol officers responded into the 1300 Blk. of Ashland, Evanston, Illinois, referencing a citizen report of a suspicious subject trying open car doors. Once in the area officers observed this subject, made attempts to stop him, but the offender fled the area on foot. Officers then began a systematic search of the area, expanding it citywide. At approximately 5:37 a.m. patrol officers once again observed this subject in the area of South Blvd. and Chicago Avenue and were able to affect a street stop at that time.
During the street stop this subject was identified as DeWitt West Sayles, who acknowledged to officers that he ran from police earlier in the morning. Officers then conducted a safety search of the Sayles and the shoulder bag he was carrying. During this search officers discovered various gift cards associated with persons other then Sayles and electronic items consisting of a camcorder, GPS, car chargers, two I-Pod’s and a small amount of marijuana.
Continuing their investigation patrol officers activated the camcorder and GPS units and were able to identify the owners. These owners were subsequently contacted, verified that their vehicles had been burglarized and identified their missing items.
Furthering this investigation, Evanston police detectives conducted interviews with Sayles and gained information verifying his direct involvement with various vehicle burglaries. These burglaries occurred in both Evanston and other neighboring jurisdictions.
Once having obtained this information Evanston police detectives contacted the Cook County State’s Attorney, who was then informed of all the pertinent facts in this case. After so being apprised, Sayles was charged with three counts of felony burglary to vehicle and additional misdemeanors.
