Dramatic Reading Series: "Celebrating Women of Color"
Fleetwood-Jourdain Theatre's Dramatic Reading Series begins July 31 and Aug. 1
The theme of the 2010 Summer Dramatic Reading Series is "Celebrating Women of Color"
The series is inaugurated with a production of For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When A Rainbow Is Enuf, by Ntozake Shange. This Tony Award-nominated play will be read at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 31 and 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 1. All three productions take place at the Noyes Cultural Arts Center, 927 Noyes St. The play is a series of 20 poems, featuring seven actresses with stories focusing on love, abandonment, rape and abortion. The performance will integrate music and the spoken word. Experience the play before viewing Tyler Perry’s movie version. The play is directed by Tim Rhoze.
From The Mississippi Delta, by Endesha Ida Mae Holland, Ph.D., will be the second production. This Pulitzer Prize-nominated play will be read at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 7 and 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 8. Three actresses perform multiple characters over a twenty-year time period. From the Mississippi Delta to the stage of the University of Minnesota, the play depicts the black female experience through pain and triumph. Directed by Jacqueline Williams.
Having Our Say: The Delaney Sisters’ First 100 Years, by Emily Mann, will conclude the three-part series. This Tony Award-nominated play will be read at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 14 and 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 15. Two veteran actresses will perform the story of the Delany sisters. This play demonstrates how vision, tenacity and courage can help strong people prevail over seemingly- insurmountable odds. Directed by Tim Rhoze.
