The City/Illinois Department of Transportation will be contracting roadway improvements on Sheridan Road from Burnham Place to Emerson Street.

Stage 1 of the project has begun this week with the implementation of a southbound detour on Sheridan Road at Foster Street. The detour route will follow Foster Street to Sherman Avenue to Clark Street and reconnect at Sheridan Road. Construction will begin on the east side of Sheridan Road from the intersection of Sheridan Road and Chicago Avenue to Emerson Street.  View the newsletter for additional street detours during the various project phases.

Motorists need to be aware of new distracted driving laws, slow down, obey the posted speed limit and be alert in work zones. It is a violation of State law to use handheld devices while driving in construction zones and the City of Evanston prohibits any use of a handheld device while driving anywhere in the City of Evanston without the use of a handsfree device.

This project will be completed in seven stages which will include:

  • installation of new storm sewer and drainage structures;
  • reconstruction of portions of Sheridan Road;
  • removal and replacement of curb and gutter;
  • patching;
  • replacement of the asphalt surface from curb to curb along with selected sidewalk replacement and driveway aprons;
  • traffic signal improvements;
  • landscaping; and
  • striping.

The roadwork is a part of the City’s continuing program to improve the road system throughout the community. The project is federal & state funded and there will be no direct charge to the property owners on this project.
