NSP2 UPDATE - OCTOBER 2010 Welcome to the City of Evanston’s e-newsletter about the Neighborhood Stabilization Program 2 (NSP2). This program, funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), was designed to help stabilize neighborhoods that have been hardest hit by the effects of foreclosed and abandoned properties. City, Community Partners Kick-off Season of Giving & Day of Caring Oct. 16

Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl recently was joined by representatives from the North Shore United Way, the two area school districts, Evanston NorthShore Hospital and Northwestern University at a press conference to kick off the United Way’s season of giving and to promote a United Way Day of Caring scheduled for October 16. City of Evanston Hires Long Term Care Ombudsman

Audrey L. Thompson has been hired as the City of Evanston’s Long Term Care Ombudsman and begins work today, September 29. Douglas J. Gaynor, Director of the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department, said, “We are very fortunate to have Audrey’s leadership and professional experience with community-based programs, service advocacy, behavior crisis management, respite care, grant administration and volunteer management.” Thompson comes to the City with 13 years’ experience working for a social service agency. Evanston Police Spearhead Proactive Multi-Jurisdictional Undercover Operation taking Guns, Drugs and Gang Members off Evanston Streets

The Evanston Police Department’s Neighborhood Enforcement Team (N.E.T.) was instrumental in spearheading and coordinating a multi-jurisdictional law enforcement effort, targeting gang members and street level open air drug markets. This operation began back in April of 2010 and involved the Evanston Police Department, Cook County Sheriff’s Second and Fourth District Gang Units, Cook County State’s Attorney Investigators, Northbrook and Wilmette Police Departments, the United States Department of Agriculture and the Cook County State’s Attorney. City Hiring Positions to Staff Upcoming 3-1-1 Call Center

The City of Evanston is in the process of developing a non-emergency 3-1-1 call center which will begin operations on March 1, 2011. The City has posted on its web site the part time and full time position descriptions and will be taking online applications until October 7, 2010. City Offers Secure Bike Parking for Car Free Day & Every Day

The City of Evanston reminds residents that free, secure bike parking is available at the parking garage located at the corner of Davis St. and Benson Ave. for bicyclists who ride their bike to the downtown commuter stations or who simply want to enjoy downtown shops and restaurants.  The facility, located by taking the elevator to the second floor (bikes allowed of course), has able secure bike racks and is available year round. Evanston Climate Action Plan Annual Report Now Online

On November 10,2008, Evanston’s City Council adopted the Evanston Climate Action Plan (ECAP). Created through a unique year-long collaboration between the City of Evanston and community volunteers, the plan outlines more than 200 strategies for reducing Evanston’s greenhouse gas emissions. This plan will serve as a guide to meeting its community greenhouse gas emission reduction target of 13% by the year 2012. In furtherance of this investigation, the Evanston Police Department at present identifies the victim in this incident as Colin P. Dalebroux – DOB 5-22-89, a person with mental health issues. An additional DNA analysis is pending, to confirm this identification. The Evanston Police Department would like to extend our sympathy to the Father of Mr. Dalebroux and thank him for his cooperation. Temporary Davis St. Closure: Sept. 20-22

This Year's First Confirmed Human Case of West Nile Virus Reported in Evanston

A 66-year-old Evanston resident has been confirmed by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) laboratory to have the West Nile virus (WNV). This is the first case of WNV identified in an Evanston this year.
