Results of Evanston Police Department's Holiday Traffic Enforcement Initiative
The Evanston Police Department has concluded the Christmas/ New Year’s holiday STEP grant enforcement. The purpose of this campaign was to reduce the incident of motor vehicle crashes, and resulting injuries and fatalities, through increased highly visible enforcement mobilizations.
This most recent mobilization ran from December 17th through January 2nd – specifically targeting the evening rush hours, and night time hours. Officers set up stationary enforcement zones in high traffic areas with an emphasis on safety restraints and impaired driving, resulting in the following citations and arrests:
Seat Belt violations: 37
No proof of Valid Insurance: 17
Suspended Drivers License: 6
Cell Phone ordinance Violations: 28
Other Traffic Offenses: 45
DUI arrests: 2
This campaign resulted in a high number of seat belt violations. Drivers should be reminded that driving the speed limit and wearing seat belts are a winning combination in the reduction of traffic crashes and injuries. Other enforcement campaigns will be scheduled for the upcoming holidays.
