There is still time to get your Flu Shot
The Evanston Health Department is encouraging residents to get their flu shots now since the peak of the flu season in the region is typically in January and February. It takes about two weeks to build immunity after receiving the vaccine, so the earlier one is vaccinated, the better protected he/she is from the illness.
Influenza (the flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and could potentialy lead to death. Most healthy adults may be able to infect others beginning one day before symptoms develop and up to five to seven days after becoming sick. Children may pass the virus for longer than seven days. Symptoms, such as fever, cough, sore throat, body ache and fatigue, start one to four days after the virus enters the body.
To reduce the spread of influenza, the Health Department is encouraging residents to practice the 3 C's:
• Clean - properly wash your hands frequently
• Cover - cover your cough and sneeze
• Contain - contain your germs by staying home if you are sick
