Highlights for the department include the donation of a $550,000 fire engine by Northwestern University, paramedic advanced training in pediatric care and the award of a $600,000 FEMA Grant for the purchase of a new aerial ladder truck. Also for the first time in 2010, the Department partnered with Evanston’s North Shore University Hospital and participated in paramedic training at its state of the art simulator laboratory.

Fire and Life Safety Services Chief Greg Klaiber also told community leaders that his department participated in the Insurance Services Office (ISO) evaluation over the last year, and as a result of the efforts of Department personnel and other City departments, all property owners will enjoy benefits of a “Class 2” ISO Rating. Evanston had a Class 3 ISO rating for the last 20 years.

“The year 2010 proved to be another active and busy year,” said Chief Klaiber. “We had our second highest run totals ever in 2010. I am proud of the performance of our fire fighters, and the continued professionalism of our administrative staff.”

Looking ahead to 2011, the Department will begin efforts to improve community outreach through a fire fighter recruitment campaign, cadet programs and community wide CPR classes. The focus over the next year will also be attempts to reduce on the job injuries through risk management and wellness programs.
