NU Highly-skilled Interns for Local Organizations

Looking for interns? Matching highly-skilled students with engagement opportunities!

Acr2BC.jpgThrough Northwestern University's Chicago Field Studies Academic Internship Program, undergraduate students (juniors and seniors,  several of which study environmental science, integrated science or the hard sciences) are required to intern 24 to 36 hours a week, four days a week in a field or industry of their choice.

If you have the need for an intern, please send a brief internship description to the contact information below that describes your organization, the work or project for an intern, and the skills, knowledge and experiences you require. The Spring program runs from March 29 - May 27, 2011.

To be a host organization, employers must provide:

  1. Substantive and meaningful work (at least 60% of the time)
  2. Training or orientation
  3. Supervision (regular)
  4. Evaluation of the student's performance at the end of the internship (we have an easy to complete form for you)

Additionally, Chicago Field Studies suggests that organizations try to involve interns in meetings (staff, client as possible) and introduce them to as many people in the organization as possible. NU student interns also hope for both long-term and short-term projects to help a team or organization achieve its goals. This is the intern's opportunity to learn a field, roles and some of the key company players. About 30% of organizations pay students or pay transportation expenses. Pay is not a requirement of the program, though it's requested that you be helpful with travel and other expenses associated with the internship outside of tuition.

You review the resumes, decide who you want to interview, contact the students directly for interviews and make your decisions and internship offers. It is an open and competitive process for you and the students.

Please contact Karen A. Allen at Karen-allen@northwestern.edu, Assistant Director, Chicago Field Studies, with any questions.
