High Above Evanston: Library Gets New Energy-efficient Cooling System
On Tuesday, April 12, high above Evanston, residents were able to witness the removal of two 13,000 lb. cooling units at the Evanston Public Library and their replacement with two 9,800 lb. energy-efficient units. This huge project went off with very minimal disruption to residents and traffic. See photos here>>>
Rigging, hoisting, removing and setting the new machines was a major undertaking. The project required precise staging of a hoisting crane, which arrived on two large trucks; a semi-trailer delivering the new cooling units; two semi- trailers hauling away the old units; and several service vehicles. Gatwood Crane Service and International Piping Systems conducted the work.
The project is part of the city’s 2011 Capital Improvement Project program that will replace the two rooftop chillers that no longer meet capacity just in time for the warm summer months ahead. The new units are smaller, energy efficient and use an environmentally friendly gas to generate cooling for the building. The city has been pre-approved for a $16,000 rebate through the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity for replacing them with energy efficient units.
