No Cause for Concern Over Elm Tree Inoculation Devices

Posted on Tuesday Jun 21, 2011

Elm tree innoculation device.jpgThe City of Evanston's elm tree inoculation program is under way and some residents have been concerned that the devices could potentially be hazardous. An outside contractor has been hired to conduct this program and will be hanging signs on the devices in order to alert the public as to their purpose.

In order to inject an elm tree with fungicide, the contractor uses a large plastic can, a hose, and battery; please see the accompanying photo for an example of a device in service.

This program is a continuation of the City Council’s expanded DED control methods initiated in September of 2004. The elm trees to be injected under the current contract are the same Signature (30” or larger in diameter) and Significant (all elms on major, collector and distributor streets) elm that were initially injected in 2005 and 2008, as well as all remaining public elms that measure ten inches in diameter or larger.
