Business Recycling Container.jpgThe Public Works Department, through a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grants program, has now placed recycling containers in the commercial districts and athletic fields in Evanston.

"The city is very excited about the roll-out of the new recycling containers. Their convenient location will make it easy for Evanston residents and visitor’s on-the-go to reduce the amount of waste going to the landfill and increase our recycling numbers," said Catherine Hurley, Sustainable Programs Coordinator for the City of Evanston.

Bronze recycling containers with blue lids (click image at left for larger view) can now be found along the following commercial corridors: Downtown, Main Street, Howard Street, Central Street, Noyes Street, Chicago Avenue, Dempster Street, Church Street and Dodge Avenue. Each recycling container has been paired with the existing refuse container.

Green recycling containers with blue lids will be placed adjacent to the athletic fields at the following parks: Mason, James, Crown,
Chandler and Lovelace.

"It is important to remember that the same guidelines apply to the public recycling containers as the city’s curbside program. All materials can be placed in the bin together including paper, glass, cans, and plastic. But items that could contaminate the recycling bin with food should not be placed in the recycling containers such as greasy paper bags, messy food containers, and polystyrene containers," added Hurley.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency estimates that up to 75% of the waste we produce in Illinois may be recyclable. The new recycling containers in our business districts will be a visible reminder that everyone can recycle, even when they are away from home and we all can contribute to making Evanston a green city.

The recycling containers will be collected by Streets and Sanitation personnel at least once per week. However, the collection schedule will be adjusted when and wherever it is needed. Learn more about recycling in Evanston here>>>
