Arts Humanities logo web color adj.jpgIn recognition of Illinois Arts & Humanities Month, the City of Evanston's Noyes Arts Gallery is presenting three art exhibits during October. A combined Artists' Open House will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 2 at the Gallery, located in the Noyes Cultural Arts Center, 927 Noyes St., Evanston. Admission is free to the exhibits and the Open House.

Our_Improbable_Existence_installation_web.jpg"Of Land and Water" is presented in the First Floor Gallery. The exhibit opened September 15 and will be up until November 8. It presents five artists working in a variety of mediums, sometimes using land or water as a primary subject, other times only coincidentally, addressing various different concerns. The artists are Derrick Buisch, Mary Jane Duffy, Shelley Gilchrist, Amy Sacksteder and Louise Vick.

"Midstream: The Chicago River 1999-2010" is Richard Wasserman's photodocumentary of the Chicago River, in all its visual richness and historical significance. Wasserman saysWasserman_Image-148.jpg that he hopes the large-format, black and white photographs "will serve as inspiration to slow down -- to find beauty everywhere even in the most unexpected places." The exhibit will be presented in the Second Floor Gallery from Sept. 28 through Nov. 12.

"Capturing the Beauty of Science" will be presented in Room 106 of the Noyes Cultural Arts Center from October 1 through 31. It cassidy_noyes.jpgfeatures the five winners from Northwestern University's 2011 scientific images contest, as well as the five winners from last year's inaugural contest. NU faculty, students and staff submit images from their research to be judged by a panel of artists, scientists and Evanston community members based on aesthetics, composition and originality. The public is invited to view the images and talk to the winners about their research at the Open House on October 2. Note: NU will publicly recognize this year's contest winners with an announcement at 3:30 p.m.

Gallery hours are 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. from Monday through Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. Group tours are available. For more information, please visit www.cityofevanston.org/noyesgallery or call the City of Evanston Cultural Arts Division at 847-448-8260.
