Eco Corner: Holiday Light Recycling Program
Have your holiday lights lost their twinkle? Keep those strings of holiday lights out of the garbage and recycle them this year. The City of Evanston is partnering with the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County and Elgin Recycling to provide holiday light recycling again this year. Holiday lights can be dropped off for recycling at the Evanston Ecology Center, the Evanston Main Library, and the Levy Senior Center.
Holiday lights that will be accepted for this program are: Mini-lights (or Italian lights), C7 lights, C9 lights, rope lights, LED lights and extension cords. Garlands, live greens and wreaths are not accepted in this free program. The holiday light recycling will begin on December 1, 2011 and run through January 31, 2011.
Last year, 28 communities across Chicagoland participated in this recycling program and more than 51,000 pounds of holiday lights were recycled instead of being thrown into the landfill. In Evanston, our efforts resulted in the recycling of over 1,200 pounds of holiday lights.
