New Year Marks Ban on Many Electronics Going to Landfill
The City of Evanston, as a member of the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC), would like to remind residents that starting January 1, 2012, the Electronic Products Recycling and Reuse Act will ban televisions, computer monitors and other electronic items from going into Illinois landfills. Residents are encouraged to recycle these items through SWANCC.
Under the new legislation, only certain materials (listed below under "Acceptable Materials") will be accepted in SWANCC's recycling program options (See "Permanent Drop-Off Locations" below). For a list of recycling options for items not taken in the programs such as microwaves, home appliances, dehumidifiers, humidifiers and air conditioners, see below under "Unacceptable Materials."
The next City of Evanston Public Works Department sponsored Electronic Recycling Day will be held in July 2012 with details to follow closer to the event. Access the PDF file for more information on recycling with SWANCC here: Recycling Electronics.pdf.
Do not bring household hazardous waste or other unlisted items. Do not drop-off electronics other than during the posted dates and times.
Supply-Chain Services, Inc. (SSI) contracts with SWANCC to responsibly recycle electronics. Watch this video for information that shows how your electronics hard drives erased, demanufactured and processed.
