Winter Break Arts Camp

Posted on Friday Dec 16, 2011

Your child’s two-week winter break can be Art-tastic! Winter Break Arts Camp’s highlight will be a visit from (and workshop with) Wayne Kusy, a Chicago folk artist who builds large scale replicas of oceanliners out of toothpicks and glue. Arts Camp also has cooked up other old-fashioned, unplugged fun, including ice-skating and 1860s activities at Naper Settlement.

Mr. Kusy’s ships have been featured in exhibitions and feature stories around the world. This art started in Evanston when Kusy was a student in School District #65. Kusy and two of his ships will visit camp from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Thurs., Dec. 29. Campers will have an opportunity to watch him rig “Cutty Sark” and his current work in progress, “S.S. America,” will receive some additions under the watchful eye of campers. Afterward, the campers will get to try their hand with these old-fashioned materials.

Arts Camp is held at the Noyes Cultural Arts Center, 927 Noyes St. Camp meets from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Youth age 6 to 12 years of age may attend for one week or both weeks. For more info., call 847/448-8260 or click here. To register online, click here.
