Evanston's Synchronized Skaters Win First Place
Ruby Jewels, Robert Crown Community Center and Ice Complex’s youth synchronized skating team, took first place in their division at the ISI Kickline Synchro Competition held on Sunday, January 22. The 15th annual competition took place in Franklin Park, Illinois, and is the only local all-synchro skating team competition.
According to Ruby Jewel’s coach, Christine Hathaway Geist, "Synchronized skating is team-based figure skating consisting of complicated footwork and close formations. Synchro routines or programs are skated to music and include elements such as lines, blocks, circles, wheels and intersections. Skaters must be skilled enough to perform difficult moves while skating in unison with the rest of the team. It encourages working together to perform a high quality program."
Ruby Jewel team members are 7 to 15 years of age. They are Sydney Baer, Madeline Falk, Emma Grenzebach, Nicole Maguire, Lily Nevo, Grace Newcomb, Isabella Reed, Lauren Robinson, Hannah Starbuck, Maeve Thomas and Brooke Viner.
The City of Evanston’s Robert Crown Community Center and Ice Complex has two other synchronized figure skating teams which did not compete in this event. Other on-ice programs at Robert Crown Center are figure skating, hockey, broomball and speedskating. The Center is located at 1701 Main St., Evanston.
