The Evanston Ecology Center, in partnership with the Evanston Environmental Association (EEA), is hosting Evanston’s first Green Film Series. The film series includes a selection of many of the best films from the renowned Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival, the largest environmental film festival in the U.S. Films will be screened from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, April 13 and Friday, May 11, 2012. The Ecology Center is located at 2024 McCormick Blvd., Evanston. Films are suitable for ages 16 and older. Seating is limited; interested movie-goers should register in advance.

According to EEA President Fred Schneider, “We’re elated to be the exclusive presenter of films from this important film festival. The curators of the Wild and Scenic Film Festival do a phenomenal job at selecting the best films from many categories, including energy and climate change, environmental justice and community activism, outdoor adventure, land and conservation issues. This is our first year as a festival presenter, and we’re so excited that we’re already making plans to expand it next year!”

The complete rundown of films is in development, but the team selecting the films has already agreed on four selections:

  • One Plastic Beach, which captures the lives and art of two California beachcombers who turn washed-up plastic debris from one beach into sculpture, prints, jewelry, and art installations
  • Chasing Water, in which photographer Pete McBride follows the path of the depleted and stressed Colorado River, which ran to the ocean until 1998
  • Return Flight, which chronicles a team of biologists working for decades to bring the bald eagle back to the Channel Islands, just off the coast of Southern California and
  • Yelp, a short film inspired by Allen Ginsberg’s classic 1956 poem Howl. It takes on and lampoons many of our uncontrollable addictions to technology and being “connected.”

Admission is free to current EEA members. Nonmember admission is $5 per evening, which can be applied towards the purchase of an EEA membership. Festival attendees who become EEA members will be included in a drawing for gift certificates from L.L. Bean and The North Face.
