Chicago Botanic Garden's Lenhardt Library Hosts Evanston Residents for a Day of Exploring

The Lenhardt Library of the Chicago Botanic Garden welcomes Evanston residents on Sunday, May 6, from noon to 4 p.m. to learn more about the library and the garden.

“We are proud of our partnership with the Lenhardt Library which provides Evanston residents with a unique opportunity to explore rare books, art and special collections dedicated to the world of plants and flowers," said Evanston Public Library Director Karen Danczak Lyons. "In addition, families can visit the Lenhardt Library and participate in a children’s program while also spending quality time visiting the beautiful Chicago Botanic Garden. All you need is an Evanston Public Library Card."

Come explore the hidden treasures in this special library:

12-1 p.m. Gather in the Lenhardt Library, located in the Regenstein Center, 1000 Lake Cook Road Glencoe, IL 60022

1 p.m. Welcome and Lenhardt Library tour

1:30 p.m. Gallery talk on the library exhibition
Renaissance Artists: Illustrations of Science and Art
Artists and scientists were close collaborators in the intellectual revolution known as the Renaissance. This exhibition examines the artists and publishers of featured rare volumes of this period such as those of Christopher Plantin, publisher of significant botanical works in the Renaissance.

2 p.m. Rare book viewing (ages 10 and over). The Herball by John Gerard, published in 1636 and other selected rare books

2 p.m. Children’s program (near the rare book room)

2:30- 4 p.m. Explore all that the Chicago Botanic Garden has to offer

Show your Evanston Public Library card at the Lenhardt Library circulation desk during this event to receive a complimentary seed packet (one per family) courtesy of Renee’s Garden of Felton, California. Also, a discount coupon for a Chicago Botanic Garden Membership (one per family) will be provided. Garden members may borrow books from the Lenhardt Library.

  • Registration is kindly requested, as space is limited. Call Marianthi Thanopoulos at 847/448-8628 or by email at: mthanopoulos@cityofevanston.org. RSVP by Tuesday, May 1, 2012.
  • This program is only available for Evanston Public Library card holders. If you do not have a library card – sign up soon.
  • On Sunday, May 6, from noon to 2 p.m., show your Evanston Public Library card to the Chicago Botanic Garden Gatehouse representative and your parking cost will be waived if you have pre-registered; an exclusive benefit for this day alone.
  • Admission to the Chicago Botanic Garden is always free, 365 days a year.
