CTA Purple Line Viaduct Work Under Way Again
The spring construction season is here, and so is the continuation of the $10.3 million CTA project to replace the Purple Line viaducts at Grove, Dempster and Greenleaf Streets in Evanston. In March, contractors began returning to Evanston, and the bridge in the Jewel - Osco Parking Lot at Greenleaf and Chicago Ave. is starting to be erected. The City of Evanston and the CTA are very appreciative that Jewel - Osco is allowing CTA to use their parking lot for this critical project.
Some subtle changes to the work schedule have been made, but the overall project timeline will not be affected (see schedule here>>>). CTA contractors (Kiewit) continue to set up their work sites and begin to construct the new bridges immediately adjacent to the existing bridges. The next site will start on April 16 on the south side of Grove St. between Sherman Ave. and the viaduct. West bound traffic along Grove St. will remain throughout, but east bound traffic will be restricted until the project is completed.
Then, on April 23, the staging area will begin at Dempster St. on east Sherman Pl. from Dempster St. north and approximately 120 feet will be closed. East/west traffic will remain ongoing throughout the project on Greenleaf and Dempster Streets except for a few instances. Pedestrian traffic at all three worksites will be open.
